When it comes to STEM/STEAM education, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is focused both on advancing K–12 education in STEM literacy and supporting students’ transition into life after school through college and career readiness programs focused on building next-generation skills. In a SmartLab, students learn to collaborate, communicate, solve problems creatively, and reset when things don’t go as planned—all skills that are crucial for the modern workplace, no matter the sector.

The Missouri DESE maintains its own academic standards (the Missouri Learning Standards), which are closely aligned with the Common Core. SmartLab Learning Programs are in 70% or higher alignment with the following standards:
