Award-Winning Video: The Oakwood School

Written by Bill Laurienti

A hearty congrats to the students and staff from The Oakwood School in Greenville, NC, as they were awarded second place in our Learning Is Different Here™ contest!

The Oakwood School installed their SmartLab HQ last year, and based on this award-winning video, we can see that, in a SmartLab HQ, students solve problems, collaborate, and persist—even when something is difficult.

“The SmartLab HQ has become the focal point of student-driven inquiry on campus,” tells Head of School Dan Quesnel. “Students explore their interests, solve problems, and develop skills that will allow them to succeed in jobs that may not even exist yet. All of this is on display in their winning video.”

“When students lead their learning as they do in a SmartLab HQ,” tells SmartLab Facilitator Chris Young, “their work, passion, and effort improve. Student-led, collaborative, project-based, hands-on classes are the next wave for education as students have ownership in what they learn.”

Students explore their interests, solve problems, and develop skills that will allow them to succeed in jobs that may not even exist yet.
